SEO for local business sites
For a shop, clinic, tradesperson, or restaurant, the distinctive signals are entity consistency, honest LocalBusiness schema, and location pages with real substance. The pack fixes everything a build can fix, and is honest that the map pack, reviews, and Google Business Profile live off-site.
The Visibility Ladder, tuned
Where sites like this actually fail
Same five rungs, same order, different emphasis. Diagnose top to bottom, fix bottom to top.
Usually a small site with standard checks. Location and service pages must be crawlable and in the sitemap.
Genuinely useful location and service content, not the same paragraph with the town name swapped. Real address, hours, services, and area served.
LocalBusiness (or a subtype like Restaurant or Dentist) with accurate address, geo, telephone, opening hours, and area served, plus one consistent identity across pages.
A clear structure for multiple locations and services: each location page linked from a hub, canonical, with breadcrumbs.
Local intent is specific: 'plumber in <town> open on Sunday' rewards clear, honest answers with real hours and coverage area.
A consistent entity so engines trust who you are and where you operate, which is what gets you into local AI answers.
Priority tilt: Weight Understand (LocalBusiness and NAP) and Read (genuine local content) highest, and be clear early about the off-site boundary.
Checks specific to this kind of site
NAP consistency
Name, Address, Phone identical across the whole site and the schema. Inconsistent NAP is the classic local SEO killer; the pack fixes it on-site.
Real location pages
A distinct page per location with unique content and its own LocalBusiness schema, linked from a locations hub. Never thin templated clones.
Service-area businesses
Uses areaServed honestly instead of faking a physical address you don't have.
Address in the served HTML
A map embed is fine, but the textual address must be in the HTML crawlers read, not only inside the widget.
The honest local boundary
Much of local performance lives off the website: Google Business Profile drives the map pack, reviews are earned on third-party platforms, and proximity ranking depends on where the searcher stands. The pack gets your owned site right, then points you across that boundary honestly instead of pretending a build can fix it.

Always honest: markup describes only what's real and visible on the page. Fabricated ratings, authors, or credentials are removed and flagged, never added.
Try it on your site
Paste this into Claude Code, Cursor, or any AI coding agent. It's read-only: the agent audits and reports, and changes nothing until you ask.
Use the seo-for-ai-agents skill pack (https://github.com/manibharij/seo-for-ai-agents) with the local-business profile: audit my site on the served HTML. Check NAP consistency across pages and schema, LocalBusiness markup accuracy, and whether each location page has real, distinct content. Report only, don't change any code or files yet.
Common questions
Will this get me into the Google map pack?
Not by itself, and anyone promising that is overselling. The map pack is driven largely by your Google Business Profile, reviews, and proximity to the searcher, which live outside your website. What the pack does is make your owned site consistent and trustworthy, with accurate LocalBusiness schema and NAP details, which supports everything else.
I serve several towns. Should I make a page per town?
Only if each page says something genuinely different: real projects, real coverage details, real local specifics. One template with the town name swapped is doorway-page spam, and engines treat it that way. The pack builds real location pages where they're justified and refuses thin clones.
Can it write my Google Business Profile or get me reviews?
No. Google Business Profile is managed in Google's own dashboard, and reviews must be earned from real customers. Fabricating either is against policy and against the pack's white-hat rules. It will tell you exactly what to align off-site so it matches your website.
